In 2022/23 Site Gallery attracted over 50,000 visits and welcomed 3000 participants to their varied programme of events, workshops and engagement programmes. They exhibited six major shows working with artists based in Sheffield, the UK and internationally. Site Gallery also premiered New Gestures, a showcase of performance art, and led a placed-based business recovery programme Out & About, which showcased the Cultural Industries Quarter and brought new audiences to the area.

Site Gallery has a highly engaged young person’s arts collective Society of Explorers. Open to young people aged 14 – 19, Society of Explorers meet weekly to collaborate, discuss and create. They work with commissioned artists and the programme team to develop projects, events and ideas.

Society of Explorers x Wishful Thinking

Society of Explorers have been meeting weekly at Site Gallery for the past decade. During this time they have been a vital voice in shaping how the gallery works with young people.

To mark the group's tenth anniversary, they have developed Wishful Thinking, their first exhibition designed as a collective. Taking place in summer 2023, Wishful Thinking will explore how gallery spaces can best serve young people as a space for reflection, immersion and rest. The group are collaborating with artists Lucie Kordocova and Greg Herbert on the exhibition.

Platform

Site has a 15 year history of supporting artists’ development through its Platform Residency. We secured a 5 year investment of £375k investment from the Freelands Artist Programme  and with Bloc Projects, Yorkshire Artspace and Sheffield Museums and S1 Artspace have supported  the professional development of 20 Sheffield-based professional artists between 2018-2023.

Many of our Platform alumni have successfully gone on to establish their careers, securing commissions and exhibiting at major UK and international galleries.  A recent success was 2015 Platform artist Rory Pilgrim recently being shortlisted for the 2023 Turner Prize.

Survey

Site Gallery is one of the four galleries across the UK involved in Survey, a major touring exhibition led by Jerwood Arts. Survey presents new commissions by 10 early-career artists from across the UK, providing a distinctive snapshot of current artistic practice in the visual arts.

The third edition, Survey III, will come to Site Gallery in 2025. The Survey shows span a wide breadth of artistic practice.  Artists are selected by inviting leading artists to nominate the most outstanding early-career artists making work today.
